Martyn's Law is Included in the King's Speech
Martyn's Law has been included in the first King's speech of the new Labour government. Speaking to MPs, the King confirmed:
"Measures will be introduced to improve the safety and security of public venues and help keep the British public safe from terrorism".
These measures refer to the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, named after Martyn Hett, who was killed along with 21 others in the 2017 Manchester Arena terrorist attack. It is a UK-wide measure to introduce security requirements to certain public venues holding more than 100 people. This includes educational settings, such as schools and colleges.
The King's Speech sets out the new government's priorities for the months ahead, outlining the draft laws which Labour plans to introduce. As yet, there has been no indication of a timescale for Martyn's Law. However, since the draft bill was published in May 2023, many premises have already begun introducing measures to prepare themselves.
